The Rob Roy is just a Manhattan made with scotch whisky instead of rye. That makes it sound similar, but in fact it tastes quite different, and is very much worth having in your repertoire. The drink is named after Rob Roy MacGregor, a Scottish folk hero and outlaw, and it would only take a few of these before you start getting into outlaw – if not actual folk hero – territory.
Note that I used Dewar’s White Label for the scotch. I would never drink that stuff solo, but it’s fine in a mixed cocktail, and you should not use a single malt for mixing. See my rant on Scotch Whisky for more details there.
- 2 oz blended scotch whisky
- 1/2 oz sweet vermouth
- dash or two of bitters
- Maraschino cherry garnish
Mix the ingredients in a shaker full of ice and shake or stir thoroughly. Strain into cocktail glass and add cherry.
