Yesterday, Dave posted Best. Manhattan, Evar. I made the drink tonight and it is fabulous. A must try. But, I don’t think that making it a Manhattan derivative does it justice. It is a bit sweeter and has more body than a Manhattan. I believe it deserves its own name and I have christened it the Upper West Side. It’s sort of like a Manhattan, but somewhat less in your face. Definitely north of Times Square, maybe even Columbus Circle.
I made it a bit differently from Dave, although not substantially. I used Whistle Pig rye and Averno Amaro. I tried upping the Amaro a bit to cut the sweetness, but Dave’s original proportions are right on.
- 2 oz Rye
- 1 oz Punt e Mes
- 1/4 oz Amaro
Shake over ice and pour into cocktail glass. Luxardo cherry garnish.
Delicious. Thanks, Dave. Brilliant!

I tried this with half the Punt e Mes replaced by M&R sweet vermouth. Very nice, definitely a bit lighter.
