I ran across a “recipe” (more of an idea since it’s so simple) for Fernet and Coke a while back. It called for 2 full ounces of Fernet mixed with a few ounces of coke. As I’ve discussed before, Fernet-Branca is an Italian digestif that has an incredibly strong herbal taste. So strong as to not be enjoyable on its own. Yes, that’s just my opinion. An opinion I’m sure you’ll share once you try it. That said, when used sparingly (that means way less than 2 ounces in a container smaller than an orange Home Depot pail) and paired with other strong ingredients, it adds a completely unique flavor that can truly enhance a cocktail (check out the King Cole Cocktail to see what I mean).
I tried many combinations of the two ingredients, decreasing the amount of Fernet each time. After several attempts, I found a combination that not only works, but tastes great. It’s refreshing and low in alcohol for those who are looking for an all day cocktail.
- 1/2 oz Fernet Branca
- Coke or Diet Coke to fill a highball glass (4-8 oz)
- Lime wedge for juice and garnish
Fill highball glass with ice. Add Fernet-Branca and then the Coke/Diet Coke. Squeeze the lime wedge into the drink and use the spent lime peel as a garnish. Keep in mind that a highball glass is 8-12 ounces, if you’re using something larger, you may want to go heavier on the Fernet.
Feel free to consume all afternoon. It’s a great and super easy drink.
