The White Lady is a classic cocktail that I found on the IBA website. I made one this past weekend as shown in the photo, and while I enjoyed it, it was very tart. I feel about lemon juice the way Will does about dry vermouth: a little goes a long way.
So today I tried again. Great success! With less lemon juice, it comes out like the best lemonade you’ve had in a while. It’s not a heavy drink, and not too boozy, but it packs a punch.
- 2 oz Gin
- 1 oz Cointreau
- 1/4 – 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice (I was at about 1/3 oz)
Mix ingredients in shaker and shake vigorously due to the juice. The first one should be in a coupe; after that, you can probably just drink it right out of the shaker.

That sounds great. I’m surprised I’ve never heard of it. Interesting that a small amount of lemon overcomes the orange taste of the Cointreau to make it taste like lemonade. Seems like a great summer drink!

I wonder what it might taste like if you added Mike’s hard instead of lemon juice? Would that not be enough of a lemony taste?
